Sergei Nikiforovich Vasilenko est né à Moscou le 30 mars 1872 et y est mort le 11 mars 1956.Education musicale :Vasilenko entama ses études musicales en 1888 comme élève privé de Nokh et prit des leçons avec Grechaninov (théorie), Protopopov (harmonie) et Konyus (composition).
De 1891 à1896, il étudia le droit à l'Université de Moscou et suivit le conservatoire (1895-1901) en tant qu'élève de Taneyev, de Ippolitov-Ivanov et de Safonov, terminant ses études avec une médaille d'or.
Il conduisit l'Opéra privé Mamontov à Moscou (1903-05) et organisa (et conduisit) les Concerts Historiques dans la ville (1907-1917). A partir de 1918, il donna des concerts et des concerts-lectures à Moscou. En 1925, il participa à l'organisation de radiodiffusion de musique. Il enseigna l'orchestration et la composition au Conservatoire de Moscou (1906-1941) et (1943-1956) où il fut professeur en 1907et chef du département d'orchestration en 1932. En 1938, il travailla à Tashkent sur le premier opéra ouzbek "The Snowstorm". Il a reçu le titre d'Artiste du Peuple de l'Ouzbek SSR en 1939 et le Prix d'Etat en 1947.
StyleSes premières oeuvres reflètent son enthousiasme pour la musique folklorique russe et l'ancienne musique religieuse. Après 1906, il produit plusieurs pièces qui montre un lien avec la poésie symboliste russe, entre autres l'orchestral "Sad smerti" (Le Jardin de la Mort) et le Vol des Sorcières ainsi que les chants sur des textes de Blok et Bryusov. Entre 1910 et 1920, il est attiré par l'exotisme oriental et s'intéresse à la musique folklorique orientale, particularlement l'Asie Centrale (Iosif the Beautiful).
